This is a little packet featuring a detailed coloring page about measurements and metrics. The coloring page contains four panes: one pane all about mass---what it is, how it's measured, what units are used. Other similar panes present details of volume, length, and temperature. Each pane contains quite a bit of text which is integrated into each pane, so students color and read at the same time. The graphics are set up so that kids who love to quietly and carefully color can find quite a bit to color in their methodical fashion. Each pane features graphics that can also be colored in a quicker, more cursory fashion by kids who don't like to color as much. This is a fun activity that is great for introducing a unit or completing after a review activity or test or perhaps on a rainy day or other occasion that merits a change of pace or routine. In addition to the coloring page, there are two crossword puzzles that are based on the text embedded in the coloring page. One of the crosswords is relatively simple (15 words), and the other is more complex (31 words). When students color in class, some finish more than others, so the two crosswords offer a second activity for students to do after they finish the coloring. Based on student interest and ability, students can complete just the coloring page or the coloring page and either of the two crosswords.
Also included is a folder that includes a presentation on high quality coloring and rubrics for scoring coloring assignments.
