Measurement Unit

Safety Notice: The qualified lab-science professional leading and directing the lab is responsible for the safety procedures, instructions etc. This lab ONLY provides safety recommendations. The recommendations are not comprehensive. The lab leader/teacher is responsible for determining the appropriate safety procedures and following those procedures. Chemistry with Confidence LLC does NOT guarantee a safe lab.

Lab Summary: Students will rotate through twelve lab stations. At each station, students will practice taking a measurement to one-degree of uncertainty using common lab equipment. For example, at Lab Station #1 students will measure the temperature of ice water to one-degree of uncertainty using a thermometer.

Estimated Time in Lab: 15 minutes

Students will be able to…
• Take measurements to one-degree of uncertainty
• Measure liquids at eye level at the bottom of the meniscus
• Write units when taking measurements
• Identify that graduated cylinders are more precise than beakers
• Recognize that it is not necessary to estimate a measurement (measure to one-degree of uncertainty) when using electronic balances
