This activity asks students to examine the species richness and species abundance of several different habitat types. Students use different types of beans to calculate biodiversity and then use their data to analyze how ecosystem resilience and biodiversity are connected. I have found that it really helps students to understand the greater concepts of biodiversity and ecology, and students really get into it! It is an excellent introduction to calculating biodiversity and could be used before students are asked to measure biodiversity on their school grounds or on a field trip to a wildlife preserve.
