In this editable activity, student run a traditional scientific method experiment on themselves to determine resting heart rate compared to their heart rate after simulating a mountain climb. You will need space, preferably with a at least one set of stairs. I have students work in pairs that take turns as "climbers". The climber measures his resting heart rate. Then upon teacher direction the climbers walk a route determined by the teacher while carrying a heavy backpack and breathing through a straw. The other partner is waiting at the "top" ready to help record data. I do require parent permission to participate with a signature.
Students love this, and I have used this activity to support my ELA colleague when reading No Summit Out of Site by Jordan Romero. Of course it could be used with a lesson on the respiratory system or plate boundaries.
