This is a skills practice lab for middle school physical science or math that helps students practice measuring length in centimeters, millimeters, meters, inches, and feet. They use rulers, meter sticks, yard sticks, and a measuring tape to measure various objects around the classroom.
This lab frequently uncovers many misconceptions students have about their own understanding of measurement. In particular, they have trouble measuring fractions of an inch! They all walk away wishing that the United States would just adopt the metric system, it's so much easier.
KIDS WILL ASK if they can use math to convert to inches. I tell mine NO, that they need to MEASURE using both systems, and they can check their answers with conversion factors.
Answer page is completed for the objects in my classroom. Most of these are standard objects and will save you some measuring time.
