Thank you for downloading “Measuring Mass”!
I used this activity with my lower level Year 11s who are completing portfolio evidence for Unit Standard 26627: Use measurement to solve problems. Included in this task are measuring mass (in grams) of various types of fruit using a spring (or digital) scale, converting grams to kilograms, and calculating “real-life” cost of that fruit. This is an open ended resource that will have students actively weighing and reading a scale.
Instructions for Use:
The teacher will need:
-Apples, Oranges, Kiwifruit, and Bananas (various amounts)
-Scales (I prefer classic spring scales but you can use digital as well)
-Photocopies of the included worksheet
Invite the students up in small groups or individually to choose an amount of fruit that they would like to weigh. They need to record the item (i.e. “five oranges”) in the “Item” column along with the “Weight in Grams” according to the scale. The remaining two columns, “Convert to Kilograms” and “Total Cost of Item” can be completed individually at their desks. I always make sure to have my students show their calculations so I have provided plenty of room for working in each box.
I have also included the editable PowerPoint version of the worksheet if you would like to change to suit your individual classroom needs (standard units, candy instead of fruit, etc.).

You are welcome to photocopy and print this activity for your own classroom use, but please encourage other teachers to visit my TpT site to download resources for their own classrooms. I also ask that you not reproduce this or any other activity on a personal or classroom blog without linking back to the original source as this enables others to search and download without permission.
