Product Description

Measuring Masterpieces! Students will investigate the "real" size of famous artworks by re-creating them (there are 6 included), measuring them to see what size they are, and then finishing with a beautiful gallery of the masterpieces - a stunning bulletin board display for your classroom or school!

I hope your students will enjoy learning about art history in this way—while sneaking in some math! When your students are finished with this lesson, I hope they will be curious about other famous artworks and maybe even ask themselves, “What size is the masterpiece in real life?

This project is great for art teachers and classroom teachers alike. You could even leave this for a substitute as a complete art history sub plan.

I have included everything I can think of to make this a successful project for you and your students. I have even included a 15 minute complete teaching video where I introduce the project, instruct students step-by-step and end with a mini art history lesson on each famous masterpiece. (See the preview file and the preview video for all that is included in this project).

Project Details

There are 6 famous masterpieces. Each masterpiece has a different number of pages (listed below). Each page fits on regular 8.5" x 11" paper. If you do all 6 masterpieces there are 35 pieces in total.

Famous Artworks Included:

  • Frida Kahlo, The Frame (2 pieces/pages)
  • Salvador Dali, Persistence of Memory (2 pieces/pages)
  • Wayne Thiebaud, Cupcakes (6 pieces/pages)
  • Johannes Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring (4 pieces/pages)
  • Piet Mondrian, Composition with red, blue, and yellow (9 pieces/pages)
  • Andy Warhol, Campbell's Soup Can (12 pieces/pages)

Included:

  • Instructions (step-by-step with photographs)
  • Teaching video - 15 minutes long (available to stream on YouTube or download from Dropbox after you have purchased this resource)
  • Quick reference sheet for video (quickly navigate through the video)
  • Answer key
  • Printing checklist
  • Artwork pages (print in color for students to reference)
  • Grid reference pages (to help students plan colors and assemble the final posters)
  • Students handouts (group page, individual reflection page and optional page to measure all of the masterpieces)
  • Masterpiece pages (exact numbers of each listed above - under the famous artworks included). Total of 35 pieces - each fitting on 8.5" x 11" paper.

Supplies needed:

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape measure (yard stick or ruler)
  • Crayons, colored pencils or markers
  • Copy paper
  • Optional: Paint if you want to really take it up a notch - if so print on thicker paper

3 Project Extension ideas (explained in the resource):

  • Have your students go around and measure all fo the masterpieces - not just the one they created. I have included a handout to help with this.

  • Have students present their masterpiece to the rest of the class.

  • Have students go outside to a large space and measure out a large artwork - to compare to the masterpieces they created in the classroom. Instructions and handouts included to help you with this extension if you chose to do it.

Thank you for supporting creativity in your classroom!
