In this Measuring a Pumpkin: Circumference & Volume, students will bring a small pumpkin and estimate their circumference and diameter using a previously measured pumpkin as reference. They will use a string to measure their pumpkin and see if their estimations were close to the actual measurements. Then, students will write the definition for circumference and diameter and then get their ratio to conclude that the ratio of the circumference and diameter of a circle equals Pi. Students will compare their ratios with other students and realize that it will always be Pi. An additional activity is added for more advanced students where they will have to calculate the approximate volume of their pumpkin using the sphere volume formula and calculate how many pumpkins are needed to get 3 cups of pumpkin filling to bake a pie.
