Product Description

A very cool friction experiment where students make two small books of paper and overlap their pages. Spring scales are then used to measure the amount of force needed to pull apart the two books. As the number of pages is increased, the friction is additive and it takes more and more force to pull the books apart. Following the activity, you can show a video clip from Mythbusters where they address the legend of not being able to pull apart two phonebooks with their pages interleaved. It’s amazing!

There is also a second activity included in this resource on friction. Students pull wooden blocks across different surfaces and use a spring scale to measure the force. Tips are described for using wheels and ramps. Procedures and result tables are provided.

Also included is a 10 question worksheet on friction. Answer key included.

Finally, this resource provides a grading rubric for a creative writing assignment where students describe the difficulties of living in a world without friction. These can be very entertaining!
