This 8 page activity introduces the student to several types of mechanical weathering and allows them to contrast mechanical weathering with chemical weathering. The students then conduct a classic lab activity studying rates of abrasion (mechanical weathering) shaking limestone chips repeatedly and conducting measurements of the mass lost. This lab requires simple materials which can be obtained for free or purchased in expensively. Many questions are included which require the students to analyze the reading materials and lab content of this activity. The lab has been correlated to the NGSS and Common Core Standards. An answer key is included and all documents are in word and pdf format.
