Students read about the mechanism of action of penicillin and answer comprehension questions. Next students research the mode of action of other antibiotics. Students focus on why antibiotics are not effective against viruses. This could easily be a springboard for a class discussion.
Next, students read an article describing the discovery of penicillin and the experiments performed by Florey and Chain. Students answer analysis questions and are critical of the use of animals in the Florey and Chain experiment. Includes full answer key.
