In this 10-lesson unit, students will learn about advertising and the media to become more Media Literate. The unit includes 10 ready-to-use lessons, including a culminating vocabulary quiz (with an answer key).

It is designed for students in grades 5-8

Lessons include:
1. Mass Media Diet – students will examine their own media consumption habits and create up to four class-wide bar graphs to chart the types of media they consume

2. Methods of Advertising – students will learn about 16 different ways that advertisers shape their desires

3. Slogans and Jingles – students will locate and create slogans and jingles, and determine the methods of advertising present in both

4. What’s in an Ad? – students will locate advertisements and determine the methods of advertising that are being utilized

5. Hidden Messages – students will learn about the obvious and hidden messages presented in advertising

6. Target Audiences – students will learn that media and advertisers target their product to specific genders, age groups, socioeconomic status, etc. and will analyze advertisements to determine the target audiences of each

7. Target-Specific Advertising – students will look for examples of target-specific advertising on TV, by matching the target audience of a TV show to the target audiences of the commercials played within that show
• NOTE: If students do not have access to TV at home, this can be done as a magazine assignment instead.

8. Stereotypes in Media – students will learn what stereotypes are and how they are used in media and advertising

9. Create an Advertisement PROJECT – a culminating project, putting together what they have learned about advertising, with a suggested marking rubric

10. Mass Media Vocabulary Quiz – a matching quiz of 15 terms used throughout the unit, with an answer key
