Product Description
This is a more advanced approach to the media studies triangle. With my grade 11 media students, I taught the media studies triangle based on a series of questions for each side. That's a good way to introduce the media triangle, but I wanted my grade 12 students to go deeper and give me more analytical and mature responses. I wanted them to stop relying on specific questions (and not considering other possible questions) to guide them through an analysis.

Instead of thinking of the sides of the triangle as having a series of fixed questions, I wanted them to think about the concepts they represent. Hence this lesson.

This lesson introduces the triangle again, but with key concepts for each side. You can see those concepts in the preview file.

The best way to learn how to do something is to do it! So the lesson analyzes the 2013 Super Bowl Hyundai commercial using this more advanced approach to the media studies triangle. You can find this ad on YouTube and I've included a link to one in the PowerPoint notes. I picked this ad because I also think it'll age pretty well and it's funny.

For your convenience, click here, here or here to watch the ad.

I usually show the ad to students a few times and then for each side of the triangle, show it to them again as we go through the analysis.

This zip file also includes a handout for students to write notes down. The PowerPoint slides are a bit text heavy, but the analysis are detailed so you can either have students write down notes or just print the PowerPoint itself and go through it together. I actually elaborate even further on each slide by pointing out examples from the ad.

After this lesson I usually split the class into small groups and have them analyze an ad on their own using this more advanced version of the media studies triangle.
