This is a lesson on brand with a particular focus on product and advertising. Students will learn the following:
- What is a brand?
- What are the eleven main components to a brand?
- How do we analyze a brand?
Inside this zip files are:
- PowerPoint lesson on brand.
I used Coca-Cola as an example and analyzed it according to the eleven elements of a brand. It also comes with notes inside the PowerPoint for you to consult.
- A handout to accompany the PowerPoint.
It contains the eleven aspects of a brand with a brief written explanation so students can follow along and later use it as a reference handout.
- Brand analysis assignment.
This is a simple assignment for students to practice what they've learned. They are to pick a well-known brand and analyze it using 8 of the 11 aspects of a brand. It comes with a simple marking scheme. It's not a rubric however. Please see the thumbnail.
I conducted this lesson and assignment with my grade 11 English Media class. Many of them struggle academically, but found this assignment enjoyable and straightforward. For this reason I feel that this lesson is also suitable for younger grades.
I found that once they understand the concept of brands in ads and products, they can then apply their understanding to brands in other media forms.
