This lesson focuses on racist stereotypes of Native Americans in movies, music, and the sports world. Students close-read the lyrics to "What Makes the Red Man Red?" from Peter Pan, discuss the more subtle stereotypes in Pocahontas, and then analyze the use of Native American slurs as mascots. This is a full lesson, so you may choose which portions to spend more time on and which to skip or "touch on," or you can break it into two lessons.
My lessons include an interactive PowerPoint with instructional notes for the teacher in the "notes" section of the PPT. It also includes a complete and printable classwork packet for students in .docx form. Classwork includes a Do Now and Exit Ticket.
*This lesson also comes with a handbook for instructional tips for discussing race in the classroom.*
