This lesson focuses on racist stereotypes of African Americans in the news. Students analyze headlines depicting White suspects such as Aurora shooter James Holmes and contrast them with Black victims such as Trayvon Martin. Students analyze the stereotypes about Blacks that news outlets perpetuate and discuss the fairness and objectivity of the news reports and headlines.
My lessons include an interactive PowerPoint with instructional notes for the teacher in the "notes" section of the PPT. It also includes a complete and printable classwork packet for students in .docx form. Classwork includes a Do Now and Exit Ticket. Also included is an optional homework assignment in which students read an article and write a 2-paragraph journal response. This HW is tied to the next lesson (Day 9) and is highly recommend to help the students build background knowledge because Day 9 is a tough lesson.
*This lesson also comes with a handbook for instructional tips for discussing race in the classroom.*
