When I being teaching Media Literacy, I think it's important to build the case to students that what we see in media affects the way we view the world. In this case, I show them about the basic assumptions we are instinctually trained to have about 'others,' specifically the link between turbans and terrorism our media constructs. It never ceases to amaze me how many otherwise intelligent, well behaved students are unaware that simply being a Muslim or wearing a turban doesn't mean that person is a terrorist. I even had the president of our ASB, one of my standout students, ask midway through the lesson, 'So, all Muslims aren't terrorists?' As educated adults, we assume a lot about the information our students have and the perceptions they construct. This lesson is eye opening for not only the students but teachers as well.
