This is a lesson on the concept of a target audience using advertisements as examples to analyze. I like to use ads to illustrate the concept because ads are self contained and short. Once students understand target audience in advertising, they can then expand that concept to include other media texts.
This zip file contains:
- PowerPoint on Target Audience with examples (I've included analysis on each slide in the PowerPoint note portion so that you can review it, but it won't show up when you use the PP.)
- Handout to accompany the PowerPoint lesson with additional information and examples for students to deepen learning
- A review activity handout that requires students to analyze four sets of ads to determine its target audience
I usually finish this lesson in one class and assign the review activity for homework. You can extend the lesson by going deeper in your analysis with the class if you like. In the past, I've also broken the class into groups and completed the review activity handout together.
Although I used this for my grade 11 English Media course, I think it's suitable for grades 9-12.
