An important 21st century skill is media literacy, the careful and thoughtful analysis of the media one consumes.
In this lesson, students will construct definitions of “media literacy”; analyze an authentic informational text; discuss the role of opinion in media choice and reaction; debate the viability of the concept of a “bias free” writer; and reflect on the importance of media literacy.
Students will be reading and evaluating real current event magazine articles to master key media literacy skills.
This lesson is aligned with both Common Core and National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Standards. It includes accommodations for English Language Learners (ESOL, ELL, EFL, ESL), exceptional education (ESE), and gifted (GAT, GTP, GSP) students.
