PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This engaging lesson takes a comical approach to examining the common use of logical fallacies as propagandistic techniques in product advertising, popular press news coverage, and political campaigns. Rest assured, your students will become much more savvy information consumers after they have purposefully used fallacies to mislead others in this active assignment. The lesson begins with a fictional news article that uses logical fallacies to prove that a visit to the doctor is deadly and to advocate for time-tested medical treatments from Colonial America instead. After identifying fallacies in the article, student groups produce fictional product promotions, current event coverage, or political campaign ads that employ at least 10 of the 15 most common fallacies. The concepts are reinforced as the class is challenged to identify the fallacies reflected in other groups’ work.
