My school has recently started pushing "Media Literacy" in the classroom.
It is fun to teach AND incorporates a lot of important English skills that could use some polishing!
This product includes a prezi (with handout) that asks students to view print and commercial ads for four popular companies. Students are then asked the following:
Who paid for the media and why?
What is the format?
Who is being targeted?
What kind of lifestyle and/or values are being expressed?
What tools to persuade you are being used?
What is the text of the message?
What is the subtext?
Students then determine the advantages and disadvantages of the different mediums.
I included a SUGGESTED answer key for your discussion purposes.
