Product Description
In today’s digital age, we are flooded with information coming from all forms of media. This inundation can help us become informed citizens; sadly, as we know all too well, it can spread misinformation. As fake news flourishes with lazy clicks on social media, we are experiencing a critical literacy crisis. Our students desperately need to learn to analyze their sources of information. This resource is meant to do just that.

For this media scavenger hunt, students will apply critical analysis skills to six forms of media that they may encounter on a daily basis. This print or digital resource will provide a fresh way to analyze the sources by immersing them in the sources they so often encounter. Students will analyze and evaluate an accurate news report from a trusted media outlet, an inaccurate news report from a trusted media outlet, a fake news report, an opinion-editorial (op-ed) piece, a satirical news report, and a political cartoon. Based on the given definition, they are tasked to find their own sources that meet the requirements for each type of source. Alternatively, we provide two example source hyperlinks for each media source that you can assign to the students to save time or use as an introduction or a review.

There are many ways to use this print and digital scavenger hunt in your classroom. It can be divided for center work or group work, reviewed together for whole class work, or assigned as an independent learning project. Also, it is compatible with Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive and includes directions for each. A short video tutorial is also included to assist with saving your document to Google Classroom.

Included:
Print Media Source Scavenger Hunt
Digital Media Source Scavenger Hunt
PowerPoint with hyperlinks to two sources for each category
Tutorial video for saving your digital file
