Images of Men and Masculinity in the Mass Media
This assignment requires students to examine and reflect on some stereotypical ideas of masculinity. These ideas are pervasive in adverts and other areas of popular culture promulgated by the mass media.
For this project, students have to find adverts from magazines or the internet that illustrate three out of a list of eight widespread masculine stereotypes. They also have to find one ad that has some non-stereotypical characteristics.
In addition, this scheme of work includes materials for consideration and worksheets to help students prepare and then draft two written components of this project:
a) An analysis of and response to each of the adverts they have selected.
b) A reflection on the conduct of a celebrity (of their choosing) whose recent behaviour, as reported in the mass media, either reinforces or undermines stereotypical ideas about masculinity.
This project does not require the teacher to screen any support materials. However, I have included in the materials suggestions for two outstanding documentaries that I recommend for use with this project.
I give students about 3 hour-long lessons to find and write preparatory notes on the adverts for this project. They have about a week to complete the project for homework. I suggest an additional class and homework to complete the reflection on the recent conduct of a male celebrity. In addition, the recommended documentaries each run for about an hour.
This project was written by Dumbledore, who is gradually posting other tried and tested materials suitable for use in media, film, and English courses.
