This assignment is suitable for use in a Media Studies course, a Film Studies Course, or as a media unit in an English course in grade 10, 11, or 12.
The opening 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan (directed by Steven Spielberg) is screened twice. During the second screening, the teacher pauses frequently to allow for discussion and structured note-taking on techniques employed by the director--e.g. camera angles, music, lighting, stunts, special effects, soundtrack etc. This assignment identifies 21 such techniques and leaves space for the student to write their own notes to keep track of where they are used and why they are effective.
The student will use these notes to help them write a test on director's techniques in the opening of this film. (The test is also posted on TPT. )
