Formal Mediation is skill and process that can be useful to resolve conflicts between students when more informal and casual means have been unsuccessful, or when the conflict is of a more serious nature.
As a high school school counsellor, I use this formal mediation method when I need to bring a certain gravity to the situation and impress upon the students the benefit of coming to a resolution. As I casually refer to it amongst colleagues, "Formal Mediation is a last stop before I pass a matter over to the administration." In my experience, students have a vested interest to resolve a dispute without involving Vice Principals, Principals, and Parents. This resource provides very clear step-by-step instructions to use with students, as well as a handout that students read over and sign, make the process both transparent and serious.
Included herein are two versions of the handouts. Each version is included both as a PDF, as well as fully-editable Word Document, so that you can customize the documents to both suit your needs, include the students' names, and brand the handouts with your school logo and name, if you so desire. Two-pages of detailed PDF instructions for the School Counsellor are also included.
The very first time I used these handouts between two Eighth Graders, one has begun to read over the handout that he was to sign and exclaimed, "Wow, this form is serious, like buying a house!" From that, I understood that he took this mediation process seriously. I considered that Mission: Accomplished! :-) I hope you will find this as useful as I did.
