Use non-fiction text to meet Common Core Standards with this great assignment!! This mini-research activity was originally designed to supplement/introduce the Disney movie Mulan. Students are instructed to research several topics (I.e.Roles of men/women, symbolism, religion, etc...) and add to a class Google Doc. The themes/topics show up in the movie.
This activity works best when access to computers, non-fiction (Common Core!) text, internet, and Google Docs are available. However, the activity can also be done with only paper/pencil and non-fiction text/non-fiction internet sources (not included).
This activity comes with a Notes to the Teacher page (which includes how you can turn it into a bit of a contest), a link to the Google Doc (where you can make a copy), and a Word document of the assignment (that can be edited). The non-fiction texts are NOT included.
Currently the assignment focuses on the years from 300-800 CE in China. However, you could modify the topics and years as you'd like.
This assignment meets the following 7th grade Common Core Standards.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.10 By the end of grade 8, read and comprehend history/social studies texts in the grades 6–8 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
