This is a project for ESL students at the high school level, but could be adapted for the world language classroom. Students answer questions about themselves and their culture, then connect these responses into paragraphs and, through the writing process and peer editing, connect the paragraphs into an essay. The information is presented to other students, staff and family who are invited by the students in a culture-fair type presentation.
The questions included here were brainstormed by my students. The first page is a list of requirements differentiated into three ability levels. There are 4 topics: the students, their cultures, what they hold most dear, and their life and experiences in the USA. This also includes guided notes on how to create invitations and a conversational piece to keep "audience members" active.
I use this to guide the entire 4th quarter and students present in the last week of school, but it could be accomplished more quickly if you so choose.
