I wanted to take my preschool kids on a tour of the school, but they are only 3 years old so I had to make it fun and adventurous! I created The People In Our School...A Musical Tour!" Using the familiar tune "Wheels on the Bus", the students are able to walk through the school and meet the people. This helps lay out the grounds of the school as well as get to know soon-to-be familiar faces.
This packet contains:
Lyrics to People in the School.
A bracelet that students wear (It is 2 inches thick and 7 inches long...I find it lasts longer if it's a little bigger, like a cuff)
A necklace that students can wear instead of bracelet (5 inches by 4 inches...hole punch and put it on string)
A classroom book that goes along with the lyrics.
People in the Book:
*I know not all schools have the same people. I tried to make it general. For example, we do not have a nurse or librarian. I just take a picture of the "closest" person to this, or just skip this part! I also know some preschools do not have all of these people. If you email me at email@example.com I would be more than happy to customize this book for your school! All I ask is you purchase the appropriate number of licenses for how many teachers in your school will be using it!
How I use this in my class (just some suggestions):
I pre-take pictures of the people in my school and pre-make the book. (You can also take pictures as you go on the tour and make the book together with your students). On the 1st day of school, we sing Wheels on the Bus. Then, I sing (and read) The People In Our School. Next, each child receives a bracelet that they wear on the tour. I carry a hole-puncher with me. We head out to meet the people in our school. As we meet them, we sing about them! Then, each child gets a hole punched on that part of their bracelet! I also included a necklace if you would prefer that over the necklace.
When we get back to our classroom, I have premade bus headbands waiting for my students! (This is not part of my packet because I just free-hand it off of yellow paper and add 2 black wheels.)
When they students leave that 1st day, they are so excited to show off their bracelets and tell all about the people they met. I find that when the students are wearing something when they leave the first day, they are really really proud of it! This adds to the excitement of coming back the next day!!!
They also love to read The People In Our School book throughout the whole year, especially as they start to get to know those people more!
I hope you will enjoy this 1st day of school activity as much as my little peanuts (and all the special teachers who are serenaded throughout the day) do!!! It really adds excitement to the classroom, as well as the school! It also really helps melt away the intimidation of a new school! Students are familiar and proud of their school and can't wiat to come back!!!
