We all know that meeting the teacher and seeing a new classroom can be an awkward time for students, parents, and teachers. You are feeling each other out! This scavenger hunt will give you something to engage them in as soon as they enter the room. It can involve the parents and siblings as well. They’ll have a chance to walk and look around with a purpose and not feel weird or uncomfortable. On the first day of school, the students will feel more at ease, having “experienced” the classroom before. The best part, for you, is that the guaranteed prize for completing the scavenger hunt ensures that they view you in a positive light before school even starts. (*Note: I have always used a box full of inexpensive candy with my 7th graders. This works well for older students, but if you have a smaller class of younger students you could always do small erasers, bookmarks, or something school-related instead.)
