This is a companion lesson to Advisor to Henry IV. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the conflict and cooperation between the Papacy and European monarchs in the middle ages. In this historical reenactment, students will write a dialogue in which Henry IV requests to the Pope that he no longer excommunicate him. Students will perfrom the skit in front of the class. This lesson includes background information, vocabulary, and scoring. Students enjoy this lesson and retain what can be difficult material. This lesson is also fun for the teacher! Both Advisor to Henry IV and Meeting between HenryIV and the Pope Gregory can be combined in which pairs of students take on or the other.
