This activity looks at the important process of crossing over during prophase I of meiosis. Students manipulate pieces of licorice to see how crossing over introduces variety among the chromosomes. Students will perform crossing over twice with the same chromosomes to see how even among the same set of chromosomes the location of the cross over introduces even more variation. Students will sketch their chromosomes and answer questions as they do they activity.
This activity ONLY simulates crossing over. There are other candy based activities for demonstrating the entire process of meiosis, but I wanted my students to focus specifically on crossing over so I developed this stand alone activity.
Each student group needs two pieces each of two different colors of licorice (4 total pieces) to complete this activity.
