Heredity and Genetic variation due to crossing over is demonstrated by the students in this interactive Power Point. Students randomly select chromosomes by combining egg and sperm to determine traits used to "build" a bird. First, students review crossing over in meiosis. Second, they are shown how the haploid cells of meiosis create a zygote containing DNA for an offspring. Finally, students use the 7 traits (random for each student) to build a bird.

This is a great activity to do between teaching meiosis and starting Punnett squares. My students love this activity, and they easily move into the concepts of genotypes and phenotypes afterward.

This interactive Power Point needs to be completed in "design" mode, NOT "slideshow" mode.

How to use it:

Small group work

Independent practice/work
