Meiosis can be a very hard process to visualize. The various meiosis webquests that I had found online for free were ok, but not great. For that reason I was determined to create an interactive meiosis tutorial that animated the stages of meiosis in a clear and understandable way. Here it is! I’m very proud of this tutorial.
The tutorial begins with a review of the stage of mitosis. Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis are reviewed with an animated cell visually undergoing the process of mitosis. Then, a quick 5 question quiz will check for their understanding before moving onto meiosis.
During the meiosis portion of the tutorial, the students will follow an animated cell through the many stages of meiosis. Along the way, synapsis and crossing will be animated and explained. By the end of the meiosis portion, students will see how meiosis differs from mitosis and see the genetic diversity created as a result of crossing over. At the end is a review quiz to again check for understanding.
This is not a simple PowerPoint where students are shown bullet point main ideas. This is very much an interactive tutorial full of images and animations to assist with student learning. When I use these in my class, I will sign my class up to visit the computer lab so each student can sit at a computer and work at their own pace. I have burned this tutorial onto a class set of 30 CD’s that I hand to my students when we arrive at the computer lab. When they finish working, they simply turn in their worksheet and return the CD.
There are 3 files included in this purchase:
1) The actual PowerPoint tutorial
2) Student worksheet (Word format)
3) Student worksheet (PDF format)
