This activity includes a reading section, a kinesthetic modeling activity, and assessment questions. Students will: (1) demonstrate the overall process of meiosis, including crossing-over; (2) relate homologous chromosomes, chromatids, centromere, genes, alleles, and traits; (3) identify cells that are diploid and haploid; (4) explain the significance of meiosis; and (5) explain the usefulness of crossing-over.
Included are the instructor notes (1 page), student handout (6 pages), and associated PowerPoint slides (18 slides). The student handout consists of background information (reading section), the list of materials needed, the procedure with written instructions and visual representations, and assessment questions that include higher-order thinking questions.
You will need to obtain scissors, yarn, paper clips, and tape. Other than those items, this activity is complete and ready to be implemented.
