Learning Goal: We are learning to apply our understanding of thermal energy to a real-life example.

Lesson Components:

Minds On: How fast can you melt an ice cube? On the board, brainstorm as a class ways that we could melt an ice cub. Students get together in lab groups to create plan (handout).

The challenge: To melt an ice cube as fast as possible.

Action: Hand out materials to lab groups. Make sure one person is the timer. Have students work through their plan to melt the ice cube, and record their time once it is fully melted.

Consolidate: What way was the fastest? Why?
