This Common Core aligned 3rd -7th grade literature study is based on the fable "Feathers and Fools" by Mem Fox. Although the book is written for 1st - 3rd grade, the imagery and message about unsupported prejudices, intolerance, and rash judgements is better suited for older grades. The purpose of this unit is two-fold: to learn the attributes of fables and offer an in depth civics unit on intolerance. This study includes detailed teacher instructions and background information about fables, and science information about peacocks and swans. Pre reading activities include anchor charts, vocabulary development and dictionary skills. Reading and writing activities include predicting outcomes, recalling details, changing outcomes, text to self application, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, a reading assessment and more. Language arts activities include collective nouns, similes, and anthropomorphism. An integrated poetry and art activity are also included. This book is a must for teaching tolerance and can be easily correlated with current events. This is a wonderful book to use when studying MLK as well. A great GATE unit or home school activity.
