Memorial Day Activities is a packet of activities and a craft to learn about and celebrate the Memorial Day holiday. It includes posters of the branches of the armed forces, an information poster, graphic organizers, writing activities, a booklet, printables, and more. It was created for first and second grades.

The packet includes:

• About Memorial Day – information poster about Memorial Day {color and black and white versions}

• Memorial Day KWL chart - write what they know, want to learn, and have learned as students learn about Memorial Day.

• Learning About Memorial Day - write, illustrate, and share 3 facts about Memorial Day.

• Memorial Day Web - complete a web graphic organizer with words and/or pictures that describe Memorial Day.

• Memorial Day Main Idea/Details graphic organizer – write details for the main idea: “People celebrate Memorial Day in May.”

• Write a List! – draw pictures and write a list of Memorial Day writing ideas.

• Remembering a Hero – write about someone you know who has served in the armed forces. Use this as a homework activity. Students can find out about relatives, neighbors, or friends who have served in the United States armed forces. Students can bring in a photograph or draw a picture of the person.

• How many words can you make from the letters in MEMORIAL DAY? – cut the letters out and use them to make words from the letters in “Memorial Day.” Write the words in the space provided.

• Writing About Memorial Day – write about Memorial Day and illustrate the writing. A word bank is included.

• Memorial Day Booklet – cut and staple the booklet together. Read and color the booklet about Memorial Day.

• Compare and Contrast Memorial Day and Fourth of July – complete the Venn diagram by drawing and labeling what is the same and different about the two holidays.

• Memorial Day Word Search - circle given words in the grid.

• Memorial Day Acrostic Poem - write a word or phrase that starts with each of the letters in MEMORIAL DAY and describes the holiday.

• Memorial Day Symbols - write about the given symbols and words.

• Memorial Day Sentences – put words in order to form sentences about Memorial Day {includes word cards}.

• Drawing About Memorial Day – read the Memorial Day sentences and draw pictures to illustrate the sentences.

• Military Service Posters – posters with pictures and descriptions of each branch of the United States military service: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard (color and black and white posters are included).

• Memorial Day “We Will Remember” Craft – craft to commemorate a loved one who has served in the armed forces. The craft can be used as a bulletin board display with the writing printables in the packet.
