This poetry-enhanced lesson remembers the heroes who have given their lives to make our country great. It also reminds us how lucky we all are to live in a land where we can live freely.
The unit begins with a biography of James Whitcomb Riley, an American writer, poet, and best-selling author. In his poem from "Liberty" that follows the biography, he introduces us to the beauty of our land where Liberty lives.
Two Memorial Day extension activities are included in the unit. The first is an art lesson and template for making Memorial Day Poppies. The second lesson which references A Million Thanks website teaches students how to write a thank you letter or postcard to a service member or veteran.
Teachers can extend the lesson by using the supplementary poems by John McCrae, Walt Whitman and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
