    Blood Type: Codominance Worksheet

Three page worksheet with questions relating to human ABO blood type inheritance. There are preliminary questions about phenotype and genotype of ABO blood types.

The students are given several scenarios of blood type of both parents. Using Punnett squares, they determine the correct answers.

A teacher’s copy is included with answers.

    Genetic Engineering Debate Activity

As genetic technology advances, tests to determine a particular person’s probability of contracting a genetic disorder are becoming more common. These tests can be given to a fetus too.

For this activity, the class is divided into a pro-testing group, and an anti-testing group. The goals of this assignment is to broaden the student’s appreciation of technologies impact on their lives, and to help develop logical thinking and public speaking skills.

The assignment comes with instructions and a RUBRIC.

Epigenetics- Why Your DNA Isn’t Enough: Video Reflection

This assignment is a Video Reflection of a presentation by Dr. Allis. He introduces the concept of epigenetics. The video gives a good representation on how phenotypes can be changed without an actually change in DNA. The video is approximately 45 minutes long.

“Dr. Allis introduces the concept of epigenetics; a change in a cellular phenotype that is not due to DNA mutation but due to chemical modifications of proteins that result in changes in gene activation. In the nucleus, DNA is wrapped around proteins called histones to form chromatin. How tightly the chromatin is packaged determines whether genes are active or not. This switch between the “on and off” state of chromatin is regulated by chemical modification of histones. Allis describes work from his lab and others that identified the enzymes that add, remove and recognize the histone modifications. Changes in histone modification can cause a number of diseases including cancer. A key difference between genetic mutations and epigenetic modifications is that epigenetic changes are reversible making them an attractive drug target.”

This video is available on YouTube for free. The link to the video is included with the download.

Several years ago I stopped using accompanying worksheets to videos I show in class. Too many times students are more focused in answering the questions, rather than absorbing what they are watching. But, I wanted the students to be actively engaged with the video. So, I started using “Video Reflections”.

The video reflection handout has two columns on it. Student write what they have learned on the column on the left. They write down any questions they have on the column to the right. At the end of class, each student needs to tell the teacher something they learned, or a question they have.

When given a choice, most students would rather have this type of assignment, compared to a worksheet.

The Mendelian Genetics Study Guide is two pages long. It has key vocabulary words that the students need to define. There are also 8 open response type questions the students need to answer.

The Mendelian Genetics Vocabulary Review PowerPoint has 23 slides showing key vocabulary terms.

As the teacher clicks the next slide, a Vocabulary Word is shown. Students need to define what the word identifies. When the teacher clicks the PowerPoint again, the description is shown.

The review can be used as an activity, or a test review game with teams of student. The winning team can earn an incentive.

The PowerPoint is fully editable. The Notes & Worksheets are editable Word Docs too. This will allow you to modify the lesson to your individual classroom needs. (You cannot copy or modify any part of this lesson to offer others for free or for sale.)

    Mendelian Genetics Bingo Review Game

    Directions:

    • Have students fill out their bingo cards, using all the words in their word bank.
    • Teacher then reads out the description of one of the words.
    • Student places a piece of colored paper on the appropriate space.

First to get “Bingo” gets a price.

    • I have used colored pencils.
    • 5 bonus points on the test.
    • Skip a homework card.

    This is a PDF file

The Mendelian Genetics Justpardy Review Game PowerPoint has a similar concept to the game seen on TV

    Game Play Suggestion:

    • Set up tables in front of the classroom, 1 table per team.
    • Divide the class up into 3-5 team, depending on class size.
    • Have each student taking a turn coming up that teams table at the front of the class.
    • Rotate, so each team gets to pick the Answer on the screen.
    • Each team representative in the front of the class writes down their answer.
    • For each correct answer the team gets a point.
    • The team with the most points when the game ends wins.

I found that doing the game this way, each and every student participates. This prevents that one student from dominating the game.

The PowerPoint is fully editable. This will allow you to modify the lesson to your individual classroom needs. (You cannot copy or modify any part of this lesson to offer others for free or for sale.)

The Mendelian Genetics Portfolio/Reflective Journal is an assessment tool where the STUDENT picks how they want to show you they have mastery of the subject.

The students are given 10 different objectives they need to show mastery of. They do this by completing a project. They type is of their choice.

    These are some suggestions:

    • Make a collage
    • Comprise a song or rap
    • Construct a mobile
    • Make a poster
    • Assemble a scrap book
    • Traditional answer in writing (in a "project" form)
    • Other ideas you have (check with me first)

This assignment can be an additional assessment for students or the main assessment used.
