Mental Health is becoming more and more of hot-topic these days. Adults are busier and that means that kids are busier. Because of that, schools are having to teach Mental Health to children so they are better able to navigate the stress and anxiety that is put on them at this young age. The CDC states, “ADHD, behavior problems, anxiety, and depression are the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders in children.” As a teacher, I definitely witness the behavior issues that poor mental health has on children. The CDC also stated that anxiety and depression among children aged 6-17 increased from 5.4% in 2003 to 8% in 2007 and to 8.4% in 2011-2012.
This yearly overview called “Mental Health Mondays” came from a place as an educator of needing to build in time to proactively teach mental health strategies to help my students cope with the high stress they face in their daily lives.
