Blast Off Mental Math solves 3 key problems for struggling students. It’s designed to help students develop strong number writing skills, improve number recognition and recall, and increase number sense for mental math strategies.
Over the years I've spent tutoring math students in grades K-4, I've come to realize that many schools use math fact mastery programs, such as Rocket Math or Spaceship Math, that require students to answer written responses in a time frame of 3 seconds or less per problem. These programs require students to have accurate recall of mathematical concepts as well as speed in their written response times. Working one-on-one with students gives me a unique perspective on what holds kids back from progressing through these programs.
I’ve noticed that many students who are unable to reach the minute goals are failing, not because they don't know their facts, but rather, they simply cannot write fast enough, or their minds are not thinking in mathematical terms; so, they take a little longer to process the function. I designed this program to remedy that problem.
One of the remedies provided with the Blast Off Mental Math Program is introducing students to the mastery program with simpler concepts. Series 1 could be started in Kindergarten as a primer or used throughout the earlier grades in remedial programs. I personally have had success using it with students in grades 2-5, mostly special needs, working at 1-3 grade levels lower than their current grade.
Section 1 of this series covers 1 more and 1 less of numbers 0-20. It is broken into 8 levels, so students only deal with 5 values at a time. And includes take-home practices and a few card games to break up the monotony of worksheets and timed tests.
Series 1 also includes a Section 2
that covers 2 more and 2 less of numbers 0-22, and Section 3
which covers 3 more and 3 less of numbers 0-23. I’ve bundled all three sections into Series 1
which includes Math-stronaut buttons for your students, cumulative goal posters, and rewards for completion of the program.
