To check if the resources are suitable for your students, please see the preview file. You can also click on each of the 6 packets separately for more detailed product descriptions.
The bundle contains these packets (available separately if required):
These resources are also available in a range of smaller bundles to suit different teachers:
My 3rd / 4th Grade Mental Math resources are labeled Set B and the 5th / 6th Grade ones are labeled Set A, to help facilitate the use of both sets with students in the same class (for differentiation) without students being aware of the age level of the calculations.
These 16 Crossnumber Puzzles (8 at each level) could be completed by individuals or in pairs or small groups, where they will promote important discussions about different mental strategies. As in a crossword puzzle, students will find it easier to work out some of the more challenging calculations once they have filled in some of the easier ones as some digits will already be there for them. Answer Keys are included for all 16 puzzles and could be printed for students to self-check (or displayed later on the board) and therefore cut down on your marking!
In the Zip file, there are two PDF files, one for each level. In each file you will find 18 pages of calculations (36 in total) with answers printed below each one. If required you can cut each page into smaller cards, creating 216 of them (432 in total), or else keep them as larger cards with 12 questions on each. There are then versions of all cards without answers, which you can use alongside the separate answer key cards provided.
The with-answers versions could be used by students questioning each other while the version without the answers could be used by individuals testing themselves. Students could then check the separate answer key. Alternatively, the teacher could use the with-answer version for whole class mental math quizzes and games. These cards ensure there is plenty of variety in questioning and a range of concepts can be reviewed in each session.
Students enjoy trying to beat their previous best score. These informal tests are split across 6 presentations (3 at each level) and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard or screen, with children recording answers in workbooks or on paper. There's one question to a slide so children can focus on it for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered to minimize distractions. You can run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer if you wish - alternatively click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. A PDF version is included for teachers without PowerPoint. Each test features 20 calculations involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. Most concepts will already have been taught at these grades but if some concepts have not been taught yet it should not matter – this can provide challenge for more able learners. Please do check the Preview File, however, to see if the sample range of questions looks suitable for your students.
At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, with the answer added clearly. Students can mark their own or a partner's work to cut down on your workload. If short of time, you can speed through the answers but each answer appearing with its question like this allows for important discussions about strategies.
