Mental Math Strategy Games for Addition and Subtraction is a set of six first grade math games for practice with addition and subtraction through 20.
. Also included is early place value work, with adding ten and twenty to sums of two dice rolls
There are lots of opportunities for mental math and strategizing
, as your students decide whether to add or subtract the numbers they roll, trying to reach the target numbers on their boards to win by marking “four in a row”!
For example, if a student rolled a three and a five, he'd need to decide whether to add 10 to the total or subtract 2 from it in order to get the number that he needs to complete the line of four in a row on his board.
Here are the mental math operations they will complete in each of the games :
Add 1 or subtract 1 (two games)
Add 3 or subtract 1
Add 10 or subtract 2
Add 5 or add 10
Add 20 or subtract 2

Each game is just one page - print and you're ready to go! All your students will need is dice, a game board, and a way to cover spaces on the board. Beans make good space covers, or if you laminate your boards, your students can just use a wipe-off marker.
For your convenience, all of the games come in both color and blackline., and are complete on one page, with no cards to print or cut.
