These mental math task cards are designed to guide students through mental problem solving of addition and subtraction.
Each task card starts with a single- or double-digit number. Students are prompted to add, subtract, or double several times until they arrive at the solution. Each step is separated by a prompt to pause and think before moving on to the next step. A few cards at the end of the set also include a prompt to "half it" to add a little extra challenge.
Although these cards only involve two-digit numbers, they are challenging for any student not accustomed to using mental math strategies for multi-step problems and mixed operations.
These can be used in math centers, for Scoot, or as a whole group activity. My own class loves to have me call out the steps on a card. The first person to come up with the correct answer gets to draw the next card to be used. Each time we play, they get faster with their calculations. This really helps build fact fluency and problem solving strategies.
