15 Mental Arithmetic Slide Show Speed Tests (20 questions each), originally designed for Grade 3 and Grade 4. PowerPoint and PDF versions are included. Ideal for informal assessment, regular mental math starter activities etc. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Multiplying and Dividing by 10, Fractions, Place Value, Money, Measure, Time and Angles. The money calculations are in DOLLARS and the measure calculations are METRIC ONLY.
Students enjoy trying to beat their previous best score. These informal tests are split across 3 presentations and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard or screen, with children recording answers in workbooks or on paper. There's one question to a slide so children can focus on it for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered to minimize distractions. You can run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer if you wish - alternatively click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. A PDF version is included for teachers without PowerPoint. Each test features 20 calculations involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. Most concepts will already have been taught at these grades but if some concepts have not been taught yet it should not matter – this can provide challenge for more able learners. Please do look at the Preview File, however, to check if the sample range of questions looks suitable for your students.
At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, with the answer added clearly. Children can mark their own or a partner's work to cut down on your workload. If short of time, you can speed through the answers but each answer appearing with its question like this allows for important discussions about strategies.
Differentiation: I've called this Set B rather than used any other identifier to help facilitate the use of my Set A tests, originally designed for 4th to 6th Grade, with higher ability or older students within the same class without students being aware of the age level of the questions.
