I use mentor sentences at the start of my day. Often, I will put this up on the board in the morning when students are coming in. I use it as a way to review grammar but also as a way for students to work on writing in their own words.
My students were struggling with writing in their own words and not plagiarizing when it came to rewriting from various resources. I used these lessons as a way to help students visualize, change sentences and think of writing their own sentences.
I ask students to read the sentence, find the grammar parts to the sentence and then rewrite the sentence into their own words. Afterwards, I show them how I could have changed the sentence into my own.
This can be done once a day, once a week or utilized how you best see fit with your grammar and writing units. Hope that you and your students find it useful!
