Product Description
Mentor sentences are the perfect way to teach grammar and author's craft through examples of excellent sentences from your favorite read-aloud books! This unit is just what you need to get started with mentor sentences in your classroom.

There are three volumes of mentor sentences for grades 3-5 to help prevent repetition of mentor sentence lessons among grades in the same school. Volume 2 and Volume 3 are just like Volume 1, but with all new books, sentences, and quizzes! Do you already own Volume 1 and wonder why you'd need Volume 2 or Volume 3? Read here! If you aren’t sure which volume to get, I suggest looking at the book lists to see which has more books you have or love to use already!

Not familiar with mentor sentences? Read all about them here!

I walk you through each day's lesson for 10 weeks- all the work is done! I've even done all the thinking for you when it comes to revising and imitating! :) Just think, what a deal- $1 per week! Each lesson includes the teacher sentence page, the student sentence page, a lesson plan page with possibilities for all 4 days, and a quiz aligned with CCSS with answer key.

Please download the preview file to see the layout. There is a 9-page introduction in this FIRST unit with pictures included of how I use mentor sentences in my room (VERY detailed, day-by-day), followed by 10 lessons for the following books:
-The Golden Rule By Ilene Cooper
proper nouns
-The Name Jar By Yangsook Choi
proper nouns
-Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun By Maria Dismondy
-When Lightning Comes in a Jar By Patricia Polacco
vivid verbs
-Firefly Mountain By Patricia Thomas
vivid verbs (personification)
-14 Cows For America By Carmen Agra Deedy
subjects and predicates
-Those Shoes By Maribeth Boelts
conjunctions in compound sentences
-The Memory String By Eve Bunting
compound sentences
-The Adventures of Spider:How Spider Got a Thin Waist By Joyce Cooper Arkhurst
compound predicates
-The Spider and the Fly By Mary Howitt

I chose books that would be in most personal libraries or school media centers. All of these are personal favorites of mine! Ideally, this unit would work best at the beginning of the school year (based on the books especially), but it could really be started at any point.

There is an Interactive Language Arts Notebook Companion to this unit! The set includes an interactive activity for each focus skill in this mentor sentence set. Every mentor sentence unit has a companion interactive notebook to help you teach and/or review the skill for the week!

You might also be interested in the Volume 2 Mentor Sentences Modifications ADD-ON Pack which will support students with disabilities, English as a Second Language, or slow writers.

Don't forget these Bats, Owls, and Spiders Paired Texts which includes activities to go along with The Spider and the Fly!

Once you see the difference in your students from mentor sentences, you won’t want to stop! Volume 2 has three more units to complete the year: SECOND Ten Weeks: Mentor Sentence Unit, THIRD Ten Weeks: Mentor Sentence Unit, and FOURTH Ten Weeks: Mentor Sentence Unit.

You’ll also love to use these mentor texts in reading and writing, too! Make sure to get BETTER THAN BASAL: Complete NO PREP Reading & Writing Units for 30 Popular Mentor Texts, as well as the Nonfiction Companion!

If you want to get all of the sets now to save money, you can buy the BUNDLE FOR THE WHOLE YEAR!

You can also choose to buy all 40 weeks of Mentor Sentences in a Hard Copy Book, which will also come with the digital version!

Want to try this first set to see how it goes? You can always come back to buy the second, third, and fourth units in a bundle if you like what you see!

There is also now a BIG bundle with all Volume 2 Mentor Sentences, Interactive Notebooks, and Reading and Writing activities for all 40 books (fiction and nonfiction)! Check out the Biggest and BEST Bundle for Volume 2!

Don't forget to grab these two FREE bonus lessons, perfect for Halloween and Fall/Winter:
The Widow's Broom
The Stranger

You don’t need to do all of the mentor sentence lessons in the order they come in the units. When I created units 1, 2, and 3, I put them in the order I used them in my classroom, so these lessons are in an order that spirals and gets progressively more difficult, but it is not necessary to stay in that order. Unit 4 was created to provide more nonfiction choices through the year.

There is a free download of the "At-A-Glance" for all 40 books in Volume 2! This download will help you see all of the skills covered in Volume 2 units if you’d like to “bounce around” within the units.

There is also a Volume 1 and a Volume 3 for grades 3-5 to help prevent repetition of mentor sentence lessons among grades in the same school.
Check out what’s in Volume 1!

Mentor Sentences can be done in ALL grades! Please tell your teacher friends about mentor sentences for their grade:

*The mentor sentence lessons I have created are adapted from the ideas of Jeff Anderson. These lessons were born from the routine that worked well in my classroom, and the demos and examples I present are variations of Jeff Anderson's methods. This is not the only way to "do" mentor sentences in your classroom.*
