Book Nook Nibbles are what we call our mentor text literacy activities in my grade 3 class.
Although we read a class chapter text each term and explore it in depth and in great detail, we also like to dip into shorter picture book texts in our literacy centers and literature circle time. Book Nook Nibbles allow us to pick and choose activities.
The Pumpkin Runner, written by Marsha Diane Arnold, is based on the true story of Australian farmer, Cliff Young, who won the Melbourne to Sydney running race in 1983 at the age of 61.
It's a great story for the fall and as a Halloween alternative - especially if you have students who don't celebrate the holiday.
