Book Nook Nibbles are what we call our mentor text literacy activities in my grade 3 class.
Although we read a class chapter text each term and explore it in depth and in great detail, we also like to dip into shorter picture book texts in our literacy centers and literature circle time. Book Nook Nibbles allow us to pick and choose activities.
Thunder Cake, written by Patricia Polacco, is a story about the way in which a grandmother helps her granddaughter to overcome her fear of thunder storms by baking a special "thunder cake".
Where we live, September through November are storm months and we have a lot of indoor recess and lunch times. This is a wonderful story for this time of year - and it even has a recipe for the cake at the end of the book.
