Getting kids to write and read is a difficult task. I know that over the last decade in kindergarten I have learned many different methods to get kids to write and read effectively. But the one way that works for me is to combine guided reading with guided writing. Using text to show students how to structure their writing into meaningful sentences is key. Also having the necessary structure and scaffolding embedded for all learning levels and language abilities is paramount. This is why I put together this resource for you. Included in this resource is the following:
-Shared Reading PowerPoint Book (whole class) Project it on board
-10 page –Guided Reading Book
-Cut Apart Sentences (to be used in Guided Reading) One for every sentence in the book
-5 Graphic Organizers to guided your students writing
Each step builds on each other. Taking your from introduction to the final student made book that they can write, illustrate and read on their own! I know this works because I have used this same system in my own class with all levels. The guided reading book and the graphic organizers have the topic embedded in them so as to remind the students what they are writing about (the topic or Big Idea).
To manage all components of this resource please provide your students with a writing folder or a location to keep all parts of their work.
